Raath Drinks Portfolio Showcase at the Winchester

This year's trade tasting was held at the Winchester Hotel on Sea Point's Beach Road and was very well attended
Some superb wines to taste as the Raaths have a good list of wine producers

Matthew Krone with his Van Hunks range of sparkling wines
We tasted the 70% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir Cap Classique and were impressed

The range. The Chenin blanc and Rosé are tank-fermented

Justin Durand of Smollan business consultants with Andrew Bradley, owner of the Saggy Stone brewery in Cape Town

Stephen Kitshoff, Springbok and Stormers hero rugby player, and his wife Aimee
with Saggy Stone Directors Andrew Bradley, Philip Robinson, Jackie Robinson and Adrian Robinson
Saggy Stone makes Stephen's Bomb Squad Pilsner

Come and do a beer tasting!

Chris Albrecht, head winemaker of Bouchard Finlayson. We are very fond of their wines
They are so well made and show the terroir of the Hemel and Aarde farm so well
Bouchard Finlayson was an early producer of Pinot noir and Chardonnay in South Africa

Crisp, dry Blanc de Mer is one of our favourite wines with fish
The Galpin Peak and Tete de Cuvée Pinots have held iconic status in SA since the '90s
The three Chardonnays, one unoaked, show the characteristics endowed by their different terroirs
Hannibal was one of the first blends of both Italian and French varietals - a complex wine to pair with great food

Sebastian Beaumont showing his wines to Ralph Reynolds, sommelier at Aubergine restaurant and other aficionados
It was a very popular stand

and pouring for Mel Sides, owner of Van Hunks restaurant

Everyone wants to taste the divine Old Vine Chenin, Hope Marguerite, from vineyards aged 45 to 49 years
and the New Baby, a luscious blend of Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, and Colombar
Jayne's wines are made by his artist mother, Jayne Beaumont and echo the quality the farm is known for

Andrea Foulkes owner of Dish Food & Social, Kathy Raath and  Lydia Nobrega of Chapmans Peak Hotel

Black Oystercatcher has now teamed up with Bruce Jack as they are very close neighbours
You can taste the Berrio wines at the farm, where they are made

The Cap Classique Rosé Reserve, which we bought at the previous Back Oystercatcher event, made from Merlot
is holding up so well and  is crisply dry and delicious with a good mousse

Allée Bleue assistant winemaker Misha Henning with their range of wines from near Franschhoek
The grapes are sourced from Darling, Franschhoek, Jonkershoek and Piekenierskloof
and reflect the suitability of those terroirs for the grapes they produce

Two Baleia wines from the Riversdale area

The 2025 Chardonnay is on an 11 year-old vineyard located only 9 km from the ocean
The wine spends 11 months in a combination of 1st and 2nd fill 300L French Oak Barrels

The 2022 Pinot Noir was planted in 2009 on rocky limestone soil
Initially, it shows restrained dark cherry and berry fruit so needs decanting

Winemaker Gunther Schultz of Baleia pouring his Shiraz

Winemaker and viticulturist Wikus Pretorius with the La Petite Ferme wines from Franschhoek

We were very impressed with the wines last year and they did not disappoint this year.  Lots of quality and good flavours

Michael Pownall, Managing Partner of Valor Hospitality, Africa, Middle East and Indian Ocean
and Philip Engelen of Brookdale House

Distiller Lucy Beard and her husband Leigh Lisk, owners of the Hope Distillery in Salt River,
tasting Lucinda Heynes' Illimis wines

Her excellent wild ferment Chenin is from Elgin and Stellenbosch vines
Her Cinsault, from Darling vines is beautifully light and elegant
The Wellington-sourced Grenache noir is rich and full, retaining an elegant character through to the end
Her Pinotage, from Polkadraai is a good example of the modern idiom, very much in a Pinot noir character

Kleinood & Tamboerskloof had an array of wines for tasting
Their Viognier and Shiraz are benchmarks

Two happy trade tasters!

Avondale wines are special, with particular attention being paid to their terroir, cultivation and sustainable viticulture
With over two decades of dedication to certified organic and biodynamic farming

Johnathan Grieve, owner of Avondale, with his trademark hat and his La Luna Bordeaux blend
Lynne was having a Leaf day and her palate was off, but the amazing layers of flavours of this wine took care of that
It is a classic Bordeaux blend with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot

David van Velden showed his family's Overgaauw Merlots, Sauvignon blanc and Tria Corda red blend
Lynne loves his Merlots, they have such character and depth and are true to the varietal
Overgaauw was the first SA farm to plant and bottle merlot in 1982

David's wines have such consistent quality and age beautifully

Gerard Holden, owner of Holden Manz with his wines
Two of their Cabernet Francs were in the top six at this year’s @cabfranccarnival

Mel Sides of Van Hunks restaurant with Dane Raath

Trizanne Barnard, well-known for her respected Trizanne wines,  showing her Dawn Patrol range
This is her second-label, more affordable range of very palatable wines in bottles and cans

A refreshing Bomb Squad Pilsner to end the evening
