Wine Spectator rating of South African wines

The July issue of the influential American publication, Wine Spectator, features South African wines as its cover story. Of the 535 wines listed here, 57% scored 18 or more out of 20, and the lowest scored 17.

We have inserted scores out of 20 because we believe that the 100 scale is too absolute, that it ignores the fact that judging wine will always be subjective. We are all influenced by emotion and other factors and a wine that we love today may not appear as impressive tomorrow. It is interesting to note the number of wines where the Wine Spectator and Platter ratings are very different, such as Cederberg Chenin Blanc, rated 4½ stars by Platter and only given 79/100 by Wine Spectator.

We have included Platter star ratings, where they are available (not all the wines are in Platter) and approximate local prices, which we have gleaned from online dealers and producers' websites.

The bottom line is that this report can only do a lot of good for our wine exports to the USA:
