Decanter Award for Rosa Kruger at Old Vines tasting

An invitation from Andre Morgenthal of the Old Vines Project to De Warenmarkt in the centre of Stellenbosch to come and taste some of the excellent wines made from vineyards that are registered with the Old Vines Project. And we certainly did taste some really fine wines as we wandered around the different stalls

It is a fascinating place and a different concept; we were very impressed
They had taken over the whole venue for the evening
Different stands with food and drink and you can pick and choose what you want

and then take a table with friends to enjoy the evening
The different stations had been taken over by members of the Old Vines Project to showcase their wines
It does resemble the Mojo market in Sea Point, but seems to have more choices and good quality

Then canapes began to appear, these were mini Caesar salads

There were many international wine industry and wine media visitors enjoying the tasting of these excellent wines;
they were here for Cape Wine which began on the 5th October and lasted for 3 days

We loved the slightly off the wall story of the names of these Fuselage wines;
the winemaker is fascinated with flying and planes as well as wines

Welgegund Heritage Wines in Wellington was founded in the 18th Century 

Daniel Kriel, owner of De Warenmarkt introduced us to the place he has created
and said that he hoped we would come back another time
He hoped that we were enjoying the food they were producing for us to taste, and everyone concurred

It was a large crowd of wine people and media enjoying the evening
and now primed to hear to the major announcement of the evening

.... Tina Gellie, content creator for Decanter Magazine, who had flown in from London to present the award

She was there to present Rosa Kruger, the creator of the Old Vines Project, which has been funded by Johan Rupert,
with a very special Award from Decanter magazine. Once a year, they add one person to their Hall of Fame
and this year the award is given to Rosa Kruger for the devotion and dedication she has given to the Old Vine Project
She is the first South African and the first viticulturist to receive this prestigious Decanter award

Rosa said that 25 years ago, when she began the journey, she knew nothing about it, travelling, tasting and reading
She has worked and walked in some of the most amazing vineyards in the world
In 2013, at the 60th anniversary of the Masters of Wine, they did the first tasting of the SA old vines wines
They shone! And, in the same year, Jancis Robinson wrote the first article in the London Times about the wines

Andre has been urging her on, and building relationships with wines, vineyards, vines and terroir
They spend 8 to 9 hours a day in the field and their efforts are being noticed and appreciated
Take life at a steady pace, never stop trying to do better and never give up the fight

An AirBnB overnight at Kronendal Street in Stellenbosch

Having an all-day Cape Winemakers Guild Auction to attend in Somerset West, followed by an evening event in Stellenbosch, meant we needed to find somewhere to sleep, as we do not ever attempt to drive back to the city on the N1 or N2 after an evening event with wine. Luckily, AirBnB came up with this gem which includes a full breakfast in their daily rate. A lovely large and very comfortable bed in the small bedroom

A tiny kitchenette, should you want to self-cater

And a beautiful bathroom with good hot water

Our charming hostess Sunet, who provided a great breakfast and lots of warm conversation 

We began with fresh fruit and Greek yoghurt, and fresh orange juice,
followed by scrambled egg, bacon, tomato (and mushrooms for Lynne)
was just what we needed to set us up for the day

Tea for Lynne and good coffee for John with toast with and marmalade

We had breakfast in their lovely house
So great to meet you both Sunet and Alwyn, you will see us again

Blaauwklippen Blending Competition Winners' lunch

We have had a very busy two weeks with several large and important events. We attended the Blaauwklippen Blending Competition lunch on Thursday, before the Cape Winemakers Guild Auction, great fun for all and we enjoyed it.. Welcomed by their friendly waiting staff and a glass of the Blaauwklippen Brut Rosé

and bobotie and chutney on a crisp slice of baguette was innovative, if a little difficult to eat

and, to intrigue us, the winning blend in a magnum awaits opening
at the announcement of this year’s winning team

Four wine club teams this year and we sat with them
Franz and Marina von Moltke of the DeVine wine club in Saldanha Bay up the West Coast

Riana and Willie Marx from Polokwane in Limpopo; their wine club is called Yin and Yang

A toast to the winners

Experienced Toast Master, Broadcaster and actor Guy McDonald was our MC for the day
and it was time to announce the winner

Narina told us how close the results were. This year, the brief was to make a Bordeaux style blend
The wines provided for blending were Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec
Malbec has always been one of the most impressive grapes grown on Blaauwklippen
The instruction for the blend was to use a maximum of 60% of any of the varietals and a minimum of 5% of any of them

Cabernet, Malbec and Merlot was the order of the wines used in the blend for all of the four finalist clubs!
All four clubs had used the same varietals in the same order, just different amounts
And the competition was very close; the judges spent some time on the very first tasting and then had to retaste
Narina then asked the clubs to comment on how they had blended the wines

The Blend comparisons

Carignan entered the competition as a sharing experience
This is their third year in the competition and they were finalists last year
DeVine have taken part in the competition for between 15 and 20 years
and Franz Moltke did the blending at his 65th birthday on their stoep at Gansbaai
Kultivaria have been taking part in the competition since its inception
and Dr William Marx of Polokwane was given the wine blending kit for his birthday!

It was time for lunch and we were served a glass of the Blaauwklippen 2022 Blush Rosé
Lovely pale rose pink, perfumed nose with rose petals and strawberry, which follows through on the dry palate;
a good pairing wine with seafood and summer dishes

There was a selection of flatbreads and salads for starters
This was the Pork belly with red onion, peppadew and stewed apples

The menu

Moroccan chicken humus, pickled red onion, coriander, basil, garlic and mozzarella

Roasted root vegetable salad with whipped feta and ciabatta lace

The main course of Herb crusted Sirloin served with potato terrine, cauliflower purée and a red wine jus

We then had a chance to taste the still unidentified winning blend with the main course
It is very attractive on the nose, good cherry and cassis fruit, a hint of perfume, almond and vanilla wood
Smooth as silk on the palate with layers of dark amaretto cherry and red and black berry fruit
Some light chalky tannins and dark oak on the end. So easy to drink, no faults
Definitely the best winner in the competition that we have tasted over several years,
so enjoyable and it went very well with lunch

The dessert, a Poached pear frangipane tartlet with cold costar, fudge crumble and cranberries
reminded us of our childhood and was delicious

Drum roll... and Narina announced the blends in order and then the winner

and the winners are: Franz and Marina von Moltke of the DeVine wine club with their 40/40/20% blend

and then we bumped into the world's most famous rugby "water boy"
Johan "Rassie" Erasmus, SARU Director of Rugby celebrating the last day of his year of being banned
by the International Rugby Board from association with any team on a match day
because of his justified criticism of the poor standard of refereeing
