See Wine shine at the annual Morvino trade wine showcase

And indeed it did. We do enjoy these trade tastings even if there are so many wines to taste in five hours
It can become rather social as we chat to old friends in the wine industry and they show us their new vintages
but that is what we are there for
We do have to pick and choose what we want to taste,
so that we can see where certain varietals are going, see what is trending and, more importantly, what is selling

Pieter Bruwer showing his family's Springfield wines with his sister, marketing manager Jenna Bruwer Kruger

We tasted Garuzis, the new edition of their non vintage Méthode Ancestrale, a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot noir
Crisp apple, lime and peach notes with some almond and brioche on the end, it has a nice prickle
The name, translated, is Etosha, a magical place in Namibia, where their grandmother grew up as free as a bird

The Albariño took us magically to Spain on a hot day, with its wonderful spicy fruity nose
It is full and exciting on the palate, a wonderful mélange of roasted nectarine and peach, a wine for food

Henk van Niekerk, owner and winemaker of Paul René, reminded us of how long we have known him and his wines
We were at the launch of his Cap Classiques in the mid 2010s
His 2022 Blanc de Blanc is exactly as we like it, extra dry,  clean and crisp, a good prickly mousse
and the lime and lemon stay on the palate

Aurelia Brut Rosé, the own label of Groote Post winemaker Lukas Wentzel, is 60% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir
Toasty on the nose, it spends 15 months in barrel, lots of red fruit before the white appears. Clean crisp and crunchy

Some spicy Chorizo sausage canapés

These had pear and brie on brioche

Good to see Kevin Grant of Ataraxia in such fine fettle
We tasted the  Pinot Noir 2024, a Hemel and Aarde classic
Red velvet on the nose with ripe cherries, smooth on the nose and palate, sweet and sour cherries in balance
with long flavours, and vanilla oak on the end
The 2025 Marroquin Cinsault, which has lots of cherry flavours on the nose and palate
The skin contact Chardonnay is another classic on the nose and palate, clean with lime and long flavours,
barrique wood gives good support with stirred lees on the end

We have recently discovered several excellent Grenaches and wonder where we are going with this good grape
It is suits our warmer climate and gives so much, the flavours are amazing
Chris Willemse of B Vintners gave us a taste of their Grenache rosé
and we immediately recognised it as the Rosé we drank with Lynne's Birthday lunch at Fyn in August
It is perfect as a wine for food, especially if you are eating different courses; it's totally suited to seafood or meat

The 2025 Méthode Ancestrale bubbly is fun, flirty and crisp, with good fruit and prickle

We always enjoy conversation with Wynand Grobler of De Kleine Wijn Koop

We have known him since his time as winemaker at Rickety Bridge in Franschhoek
where he made wonderful Syrah and Semillon
Now he buys in grapes from Western Cape vineyards whose terroir suits the wines he wants to make
The 25 year old Debutant Semillon vines are from Franschhoek, source of the best Semillon
Roundness on the palate with natural acidity and layers of flavour, only 11% alcohol
Pieke Steen Chenin Blanc is from old vines in phylloxera-free Piekenierskloof
It is perfumed, almost wearable
Shy initially on the nose, but wow on the palate where it continues to open for a long time

The Hoendertande (Hens teeth) Pinot Noir 2022 is silky and full of cherry fruit with chalky tannins

John Loubser's The Dog Star wines come from Bonnievale, Robertson
Best known for his superb Silverthorn Cap Classiques, this is his new foray into still wines
The Sur Li Chardonnay 2026 has had no wood contact
with crisp white lime, peach and pear character on the nose and palate
It has great length and depth and is a food wine

Tanya Reynolds and a busily explaining John Loubser

Winemaker Aldert Nieuwoudt and Sales Manager Kate de Fleuriot of Eikendal in the Helderberg quarter of Stellenbosch
The 2023 Chardonnay has the perfume of sweet fruit and is full and round on the good long palate,
with peach and nectarine flavours
The 20% oak contact just supports, a style we prefer

The Smuggler's Boot range is made by Richard Kershaw and Dudley Wilson
We tasted the 2023 Chardonnay. It has a dive-in nose, full of good fruit
Gentle on the enjoyable palate, almost oily, with freshness and good length

Other of their wines we sampled were their superb Chardonnays and Pinot noirs under the Kershaw label

Richard Kershaw and Sarah du Plessis, his sales and marketing manager, presented the wines

Christelle and Nico Grobler, owners of La Brune in Elgin

Their 2023 Sauvignon Blanc had skin contact and is picked late
It has a complex nose and palate with good green pyrazines and long flavours

We tasted the La Brune Blanc de Blanc Cap Classique
It is Extra Brut, which we prefer; clean, crisp, long and classic

Michaela Hindle and winemaker Thys Louw presented the Maastricht wines. The farm was established in 1700
We tasted the 2024 Merlot
It has a good nose, soft with a hint of oak. Juicy and full of great berry fruit, with fruit in layers; calls loudly for red meat

This beautiful flower, Butterfly amaryllis aka Hippeastrum papilio, was on Miles Mossop's stand

We tasted the 2023 Saskia, named after Miles' daughter
A blend predominantly of Chenin Blanc,
with Clairette Blanche, Viognier, Verdelho and Grenache Blanc
It has a rich nose, full of stone fruit, some bruléed and toasted
On the palate, apricot, lime, nectarine, peach, all open up on the palate
Food calls, particularly prawns, crayfish and trout!
The 2021 Max (named after his son) is a classic Cape Bordeaux blend

Louis Roos of Mooiplaas is an old and treasured friend
We always have to taste his excellent Bush vine Houdemoed Chenin Blanc
The 2026 is full of dimensions, full of yellow fruit, juicy with good lees on the end
The 2023 Merlot Cabernet Franc blend has red berries on its slightly shy nose
Dark berry fruit full on the palate with lots of dark oak, layered. The Cabernet Franc is present
The wine spends 24 months in 2nd and 3rd fill barrels

Three mates! Henk van Niekerk, Rui Blanco and Lukas Wentzel

Winemaker Hagen Viljoen presenting the Zevenwacht wines

His 2023 Blanc de blancs Cap Classique was new to us
It has a sharp prickle in the mousse and is very clean and bone dry

Rianie Strydom makes seriously good Stellenbosch wines
The Epice 2023 Cabernet Franc is classic with its smoky nose, it is very sophisticated
Licorice and dark chocolate fill the palate with deep flavours of black cherry and good wood
It really shouts for good steak or venison

Rianie chatting to members of the wine trade

Weltevrede in Bonnievale has a good selection of premium Chardonnays
The Calcrete is crisp and classic, showing the chalky soil that is characteristic of this area

and a range of excellent Cap Classiques
The NV Entheos,  a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, is crisp with a good prickly mousse,
lime more than cherry on the crisp long palate
The Philip Jonker 2023 The Ring is a Blanc de Blanc, the first of that label since 2013
Perfume and limestone from the terroir, a superb Chardonnay Cap Classique

Mulderbosch in Stellenbosch had their Six Rows Cabernet Franc, which goes through a natural ferment
It is classic, with minerality and savouriness on the nose, with a hint of mint
On the palate, full of flavour with sweet and sour fruit in balance; it has good length and it is a food wine par excellance
The 2023 Faithful Hound Cape Bordeaux blend
The Petit Verdot is up front with violets on the nose and the Cabernet and Cabernet Franc are both detectable
Salty licorice, minerality, and the Cabernets are prominent on the palate with lots of layered dark berry fruit,
chalky tannins and earthiness from the terroir
A splendid wine

Lynne being poured a tasting sample of Stark Conde wines from Stellenbosch by winemaker Jaen Lochner
The 2023 Jonkershoek Rhône style Field Blend has spice and dark fruit on the nose
On the palate, initially soft and gentle, then WOW, hello!
Fruit and acidity wake up the palate; it's a whole bouquet of grapes
The Three Pines 2023 Syrah is a single vineyard wine and has incense wood on the good nose
Sweet berry fruit in soft, long layers; it's sappig (juicy) and calls for lamb, pork and beef
Impressive and woke up palates which were becoming jaded
The Oude Nektar Cabernet Sauvignon is quite shy and restrained initially
Silky, chalky, grippy, velvety red and black berry fruit
The wine is named for the old manor house on the estate and has nothing to do with sweetness

Nearing the end of a very good, but long, tasting; we were there from 3 to 8 pm

Jolandie Fouche with her own Wolf and Woman wines
She is also the winemaker at Kloovenberg near Riebeek Kasteel
Her Swartland Chenin has lots of fruit and is full on the palate
We really liked her Piekenerskloof Grenache Blanc, it's full of varietal flavour, silky and rounded

We also really enjoyed her Grenache Rosé
when we last had it with Ramen at Peter Tempelhof's Ramenhead Japanese restaurant

The 43rd annual Blaauwklippen Blending competition lunch

A cheerful welcoming team

The obligatory glass of a good Blaauwklippen Cap Classique, nicely chilled

Media members mingle with each other and speak to the contestants

Clive Torr CWM and Michael Bampfield Duggan of Wine Concepts

Blaauwklippen head winemaker Narina Cloete, MC Guy McDonald
and Nanette de Hart, Blaauwklippen Brand Home & Destination Manager

Sisters Narina Cloete and Nanette de Hart

Greek Keftedes - they were wonderfully moist and moreish, with a yoghurt Tzatziki dip

Accompanied by good Pita bread

"Do you think they are ready to begin?"

MC Guy McDonald opened the proceedings. He is always entertaining
There were 65 entries last year. This year there were 79!

Speaking to a mostly attentive audience
The judging panel was Narina Cloete, Clive Torr CWM, winemaker Marius Lategan, Guy Macdonald,
winemaker Alister Rimmer and, in addition, Wine Judge Michael Fridjhon was happy to join them this year
He commented while tasting the blends, "This is difficult!" Perhaps it speaks to the quality of this year's entries?

Narina Cloete celebrates 10 years as Blaauwklippen's head winemaker this year,
She is a previous Diners Club Young Winemaker of the Year laureate
and  she was acclaimed Woman Winemaker of the Year in 2025
It was her birthday the day before, so we all sang the song!
She welcomed us all to the 43rd year of the Blaauwklippen Blending Competition Award lunch
She told us some exciting news, as of that morning the Blaauwklippen Blanc de Blanc Cap Classique was in the bottle
She spoke about the blending wine components and the decision to make a South African style Bordeaux blend,
about the competition and the four wine clubs that have reached the final

Blaauwklippen head viticulturist Jaco van der Westhuizen also known as Boom (tree); he is rather tall
He spoke about the vintages of the wines, temperatures and rain in 2024 and 2025 which was a good harvest

The winning blend has always been bottled in magnums, which are available for sale on the estate

and if you think a magnum is large, try this...

The Lunch Menu

Just released Blaauwklippen chardonnay on ice; we were the first group to taste it

Released in time for this event, it was served with the first course
It has golden fruit on the nose and palate with a hint of wood support on the end from 30% new barrels
Clean on the palate which becomes full, lovely stone fruit and good fruit acidity; long flavours
We really enjoyed it

The first course was entitled Loaded whipped Feta
topped with olive oil, green olives, chilli flakes, crisp onion and pistachio nuts
Served with warm traditional Greek village bread. Lots of creamy cheese enhanced by the green olives
and the crunch of the onion and nuts, scooped up with the toasted bread

Then a member of each club was able to tell us about his club. It was really fun to be able to chat to them all
Carignan My Wayward Son member Ryan de Metz from Pretoria was their spokesman
This was the third time they had reached the finals. The club meets to taste wine, local and overseas, over a meal
This year, it was tasted with a 6 hour roasted beef

DeVine Club, from Saldhana Bay, up our West Coast
Franz von Moltke and Marina were two of the six members of the family club
Frans told us the club had entered this competition for the last 18 years
They were finalists 5 years ago and they so enjoy doing it. Franz has a mussel and oyster farm

Lyttelton Wyngilde, from Pretoria
was represented by Thiens van der Walt and Kalise van der Walt, Krisjan Corf and Nikita McMillan
Thiens told us about the eight members who are family and friends

Ongava International Wine Tasters, Namibia
Ricardo Coelho and Cathrine Rütz represent the first club from Windhoek to enter. Ongava means Rhino
The club is 33 years old and is truly international, with members from Namibia, South Africa, Germany and Australia
Twenty members only, so they can do a one bottle tasting and meet once  a month
It is an established wine club. Ricardo runs two businesses in Windhoek; one is a wine boutique
This was their first attempt

An enhanced Greek village salad served with the main course

Everyone received a very traditional plate with a Kleftiko lamb shank wrapped in paper

The Kleftiko lamb was perfectly cooked and fell off the bone. It was in a good rich sauce with the potatoes
Lots of textures and flavours and a perfect match for the winning Blaauwklippen magnum,
this year a blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Malbec, 20% Cabernet Franc
It was one of the best competition entries we have tasted over the years
The Cabernet Franc takes centre stage on the nose despite being the smallest contributor
There is savouriness, pepper, perfume and then a hint of Malbec
Silky on the palate, full of dark berry fruit and alcohol, licorice, dark plum and black cherry
It earned an unexpected WOW from us

Nanette de Hart brought in the floating trophy

Guy announced the winner.... Carignan My Wayward Son

.... Nadine and Ryan de Metz of Carignan My Wayward Son, from Pretoria
The winning blend was 20% Cabernet Franc, 10% Clone 46 Cabernet Sauvignon,
36% Clone 169 Cabernet Sauvignon, and 40% Malbec
It was bottled by winemaker Narina Cloete under the Blaauwklippen label
and is available for sale online and at the Tasting House
Dark cassis, blueberry and floral violet notes lead the nose, with hints of dark chocolate and fruitcake spice beneath
The palate is rich in texture, with a creamy mid-palate and a flavourful, lingering finish carried by fine, expressive tannins

Desert was an almond and walnut topped Baklava and  Vanilla Ice cream
It is a very good winning wine and the  food was also much appreciated

Thank you Narina and Blaauwklippen.  Perhaps we might enter next year ?????
