The Vinimark Wine Fair 2025 at the Castle of Good Hope, Cape Town

The Castle of Good Hope, built between 1666 and 1679, is known as the oldest surviving building in South Africa
The main entrance to the Castle was built between 1682 and 1684 to replace the original entrance
which was between the Buuren and Katzenellenbogen bastions

Vinimark had erected a huge pavilion for the tasting

A huge bunch of grapes, centrepiece of the Pommery champagne exhibit
They were fresh so must have been imported, our vineyards are still resting

There was a table groaning with food

Fruit, different breads, cheeses, nuts, olives

The very best thing was this superb Jamón ibérico (Spanish ham)

Jamón ibérico which melted in the mouth

and there was a lot of wine tasting to do

AJ Nel with the Vilafonté Seriously Old Dirt, watched by Shaun Terry
We don't often get to taste Vilafonté and Lynne was very impressed with the 2022 Vilafonté Series C,
a blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 10% Malbec
We were rather tasted out from the wonderfully intense Syrah Masterclass and this livened up the palate again
Lynne said: "I can wear this wine. So perfumed, so intense on the nose, a really superb and interesting wine
I was not expecting the palate to be as astounding as it was
Full on cassis bomb, so full of good fruit in layers with chalky tannins, minerality and good dark oak, in balance
I'm a little in love"

He knows we are enjoying the wine
