Breakfast at Spice, lunch at Gibson's

During our lovely Christmas break we did go out to a couple of places. Our last dash to do Christmas shopping at the Waterfront left us depleted in many ways, so we needed some lunch. John fancied a burger, so we headed for Gibson’s on the dock side which, although busy, had tables
John had the Standard Gourmet Burger with great crisp chips
Which gave Lynne huge chip envy, so she ordered a serving of the Sweet Potato chips. If you like sweet potatoes, you will love these. She didn't feel like anything large and asked if she could just have the starter of Calamari. You can have it fried or grilled - her choice is always grilled if available and it comes dressed with lemon and a mixed leaf salad and was really superb. Warning, it is quite spicy with fresh green chilli and very tender. We drank Gibson's' house ale with the food

Later in that week, we joined friends for breakfast at the Sugar Hotel in Main Road, Green Point. Hyperli had a voucher -
Choice of Breakfast for up to Four at Spice on Main for R185.00, which is great value
We have used Hyperli quite a bit this year; the offers have proved to be very good
There were lots of choices for us on the menu too. The prices are good
Coffee and other drinks were not included
We booked for 10 am and were surprised to see an almost empty restaurant, unusual for a Saturday morning
Perhaps everyone was doing last minute shopping
The terrace is covered, so we decided to set outside in the shade. We have previously had a good dinner at Spice
Very good coffee, lots of crema on the Americano
The pancakes were voted a hit and come with mascarpone, berries and maple syrup
The Smoked Salmon Benedict had a rich, but rather mustardy, tarragon sauce
A cheese and bacon omelette and a vegetarian one for the lads were appreciated
The interior of John's omelette: Bacon, cheese, spinach and tomato. We paid just for the extra coffees and a pot of green tea
Service was slow, lackadaisical and uncommunicative until the manager came on duty
More training needed, especially as we were the only customers there for breakfast for most of the mid morning
The food was enjoyable. Our tip reflected the standard of service
